Why it stays the same every time
A consistent methodology is what makes an inventory repeatable year on year, and what makes it easier to hand to a reviewer or auditor when the time comes. Each step produces its own documentation: boundaries, data sources, calculation methods and assumptions. The reasoning behind every figure is on record, not just the figure itself.
The last step is deliberate. A greenhouse gas inventory shouldn’t end at the reported number. The same structured data can be used to identify trends, anomalies and areas that warrant further attention.

Depending on the engagement, this draws on the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance, the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard, the Australian National Greenhouse Accounts, the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting framework, and the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards including AASB S2.
